Introduction to Grass-Fed Beef |
|

Here at Adelaida Springs Ranch we raise cattle naturally to provide you with a healthy, delicious alternative to industrial, corn-fed beef. We absolutely love our cows and the landscape that feeds them. Most of all we love the taste of the tender, succulent beef they produce. These beautiful Angus cattle are bred naturally here and graze freely on the ranch for their entire lives. We believe our approach is better for the animals, better for the environment and makes tastier food that's better for you. To learn more about our ranch and growing techniques, read our pastures and practices
article. If you want to learn more about the nutritional advantages of natural, grass-fed beef, read our health benefits article.
Although our beef is available in a few local shops and restaurants, including J&R Custom Meats in Paso Robles and Nature's Touch in Templeton, we are excited about selling meat directly to our customers. By selling directly, we can offer you a better price and related benefits, such as discounts on wine, events and ranch stays. Most importantly, you have access to the ranch and can get to know more about the source of your food. You can associate the natural beauty and sustainable abundance of Adelaida Springs Ranch with a great tasting, healthy addition to your diet.
All of our beef is USDA inspected, frozen fresh and vacuum packed in plastic by Paso Robles Meat and Sausage. Local pick-up in Paso Robles, Templeton and Atascadero is available, or come visit us at the ranch and pick-up your beef here. We'd love to meet you and show you around.

Good mother cow and new calf
Adelaida Springs Ranch cattle are purebred Angus or crossbred with at least 75% Angus blood. We raise our cattle entirely on our home ranch pasture grass with a little supplementary hay and minerals in the fall. We never feed our animals any grain. Our cattle are all at least 50% New Zealand genetics, where they have been breeding grass-fed cattle for over 100 years. Our bulls are imported and bred locally at Fair Oaks Ranch on Adelaida Road in Paso Robles. These cattle are descended from prestigious Turihaua Angus in New Zealand, Australasia's oldest breeder. |
The Right Place
We think the coastal mountains west of Paso Robles are a great spot to raise prime beef naturally. One old cowboy calls our place the "honey hole." Ample annual rainfall, totalling over 30 inches per year on average, is the result of our proximity to the ocean (just 12 miles to the southwest) and our mountain valley location. Our rich, rolling hills are prime oak woodland, covered with thick grasses and forbs, like wild rye, clover, vetch and filaree. This natural, high-energy feed results in fat, well muscled cattle without resorting to grain-based feeds and supplements that are the staple of commercial feedlots. Of course we never use hormone supplements or antibiotics, which are common in grocery store beef. |

Health Benefits of Grass-fed Beef |
|
Grass-fed beef provides many benefits that cannot be found in commercial, grain-fed beef. Compared with commercial beef, grass-fed beef is lower in calories, contains more of the "good" fats and fewer "bad" fats, is richer in antioxidants and doesn't contain added hormones, antibiotics or other drugs.
Lower in Fat and Calories
Meat from grass-fed cattle is lower in total fat; it can have as little as 1/3 the fat as a similar cut from a grain-fed animal. Grass-fed beef has about the same fat content as skinless chicken thighs, wild venison or elk. And because grass-fed beef is lower in fat, it is also lower in calories. Fat has 9 calories per gram, while protein has only 4 calories per gram. If everything in your diet remained the same but you switched from grain-fed to grass-fed beef, you'd lose about 6 pounds per year.
Abundant Healthy Fats
Grass-fed beef has three times more omega-3 fatty acids than grain-fed beef. Omega-3s are called "good fats" because they play a vital role in every cell and system in your body. Omega-3s help reduce blood pressure, prevent cardiovascular diseases, maintain healthy brain function, prevent and/or slow the growth of many cancers, and prevent arthritis. Grass-fed beef also has fewer saturated fats which are associated with heart disease, and a better ratio of omega-3 to omega-6 fatty acids.
Higher Levels of Vitamins and Minerals
Grass-fed beef contains 10 times more beta-carotene than corn-fed beef, and studies have shown that beta-carotene is important for stimulating the immune system and maintaining healthy vision, skin and bones.
You'll receive triple the amount of vitamin E when you eat grass-fed beef. Vitamin E is linked with a lower risk of heart disease and cancer. This powerful antioxidant may also have anti-aging properties. Most Americans are deficient in vitamin E.
Higher levels of the essential minerals calcium, magnesium and potassium, as well as higher levels of B-vitamins thiamine and riboflavin, are also found in grass-fed beef. |
